TESTIMONIALS

When Anne Carter told the three of us we would be coming to “writing heaven” she was not exaggerating. Everything about Anne, her home, the view, the food, the excursions, the conversations and of course the workshops, combined to make the very air I breathed infused with encouragement, motivation, inspiration and creativity.I felt completely taken care of in terms of comfort. My bed, desk, and chair were perfect. The food  was thoughtful in terms of people’s tastes and there was never a possibility of being hungry. Dinners were creative and amazing and so much fun in terms of communal preparation and dining. The business of getting the live lobsters into the pot is one I won’t soon forget.
And of course we wrote and wrote and wrote. All four of us. In whatever inside or outside place we chose. Hours of uninterrupted writing. Sometimes on the porch, the beautiful river a stone’s throw away, or our individual rooms, the river still in view.
The workshop process was full of intense listening, excellent and knowledgeable feedback, lots of laughter but most of all an honouring of the work we shared with each other.
Of course, we took breaks. To the local folk festival, excursions to the glorious beach where one could walk forever, to the bakery and nearby shops by ferry, or in Mahone Bay and Lunenburg before two yummy restaurant dinners.
It was  hard to leave Anne. So thoughtful, insightful, funny and generous with her amazing writing expertise. And hard to leave the two creative interesting women who like me came on this journey.
A gift. All of it. I feel blessed.
Susan Marcus (Gemini Award writer for Mr. Dressup)

Spending a week at Anne’s retreat was like giving myself a gift: space, time, and permission to write, together with dedicated writers and peaceful views of the LaHave River. An ideal environment to write! During my week, I was able to polish a picture book that’s close to completion, and to delve back into a novel and achieve a breakthrough on a particularly challenging section.
Workshopping every evening allowed us to see how our work was perceived, to learn more about writing craft drawing on Anne’s experience, and to evolve our work in an environment free of judgment. Being surrounded by writers also provided energy and inspiration to keep going with our work.
Visits to charming locations in the region, Mahone Bay and Lunenburg, added the perfect sight-seeing touches to the week, and plenty of souvenir-buying opportunities. I’m grateful I gave myself this opportunity to concentrate on my writing – two weeks would be amazing.
