Author Biography: Anne Laurel Carter

WHERE DID YOU GROW UP?

Threesome

Don Mills. It felt safe (little did our parents know). Here’s a picture of me with my older sister and brother.

WHAT KIND OF KID WERE YOU?

I was a daydreamer and loved making up stories for my dolls and friends to act out.

I loved horses, had leather chaps and wore them after school to gallop around Don Mills on my broomstick horse. When I was older I planned to ride bareback in a circus.

Grade 6 prison

Grade 6 was my best year at school. I had a crush on my teacher, Mr. Carson, who said, “Anne, you could be a writer.” He won my pixie heart.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR NEW WRITERS?

Have adventures. Read. Try different jobs. Read with kids. A lot. Jot down your ideas.

WHEN DID YOU START WRITING?

Grade 6. High school. University. Nothing serious until I began reading out loud to my kids. I fell in love with picture books. I sat down, tried to write one, and was hooked.
